End Game Update

I'm finally off the AT and continuing my journey to Canada. There are a lot of awesome stories that came out of the last few weeks...so, stay tuned... For now, know that I am safe, warm, and happy. I'm in Millinocket, Maine, with a few days left until I cross the Canadian border and end this epic trek!

Occupy AT- I'm Such an Awesome Protester

Occupy AT- I'm Such an Awesome Protester

I'm such an awesome protester, it's not even funny, but the rest of this story is absolutely hilarious. The AT runs right through Hanover, NH. The town is home to Dartmouth University, of Animal House fame. They're also a feeder school for pricks going into Wall Street and all those "evil American corporations." So, naturally, they have an "Occupy...Read more

Night Hiking

Night Hiking

Hiking at night is generally not a good idea. It usually means you're late, you're tired, and you can't see as well. Some outdoorsmen call twilight the bewitching hour, because statistically, more accidents happen around dusk than any other time of the day. This makes sense- you're tired, the light isn't as good, and you just want to get to bed....Read more

Cold as Ice

Cold as Ice

You're as cold as ice, you're willing to sacrifice our love...oh AT...I love you, but why do you have to be so cold? Oh snap, cold snap! Those were the words that ran through my head as the biting cold woke me up from a deep sleep. The clouds had lifted and the temperature quickly dropped about 10 degrees. It's time to get some new gear! After...Read more

Summiting Katahdin- The "Side Hike" of the Year

Summiting Katahdin- The "Side Hike" of the Year

Every day on the trail, multiple times a day, I hear the same question: What are you going to do when Baxter closes? My response has always been, "We'll see." The truth is, Baxter never really closes, it just becomes restricted. In any case, when I got to Connecticut where I had left my truck, I decided to take a trip up to Maine to do some...Read more

Massachusetts Hospitality

Massachusetts Hospitality

Most people don't think of Massachusetts as an incredibly hospitable place. Boston...yankees....I don't even know what the proper denomyn is...it's Masshole right? All FALSE. Massachusites (had to look it up) have institutionalized hospitality. Here's the story of my trek through Mass: Night 1: I stumble into Upper Goose Pond Cabin after dark on...Read more

Dia del Absurdo

Dia del Absurdo

To begin, it's strange to see anyone hiking in Vermont this time of year. Hiking for the day is pretty common among Vermonters, however overnight camping in the woods is pretty much done by this time in the season. It's just too cold for people except for hunters and crazy hikers like myself. Since there aren't many thru hikers pushing through,...Read more

Where's Waldo?

Where's Waldo?

If you were looking hard enough over the past week, you might have seen me in New York City, New Haven, Boston, Bangor, or climbing Mt. Katahdin in a blizzard. The miles I've put down have prevented me from updating my blog as often as I would like. I've done some serious outdoor stuff. To update everyone on my plans, here's the deal: Last Monday...Read more

The Thru-Hiker Mindset

The Thru-Hiker Mindset

I'd like to try to explain a small portion of the mindset you get into as a long distance hiker. Sometimes what we do or how we act is counter-intuitive, quirky, or downright insane. What kind of person hikes for thousands of miles? How do we cope? What keeps us going? What exactly is rattling around in this crazy head: Mileage: Some people ask...Read more

It Gets Better!

It Gets Better!

Part of life consists of going through some crap just so you better appreciate the good. The other days was a watershed. In case you haven't noticed, I'm rather cynical, which also means I get really excited when awesome things happen. I never really expect them, so it's a great surprise. (BTW, if you haven't noticed that I'm cynical..this is...Read more
